Australia's Deathmatch Downunder premieres on IWTV
Australia's newest promotion, Deathmatch Downunder, will premiere their debut event "...And Out Come The Wolves" this Thursday night (1/28) at 8pm EST on IWTV. The event, which took place on January 16 in front of a sellout crowd in Carlton, Victoria, saw the return of high-profile hardcore wrestling to a continent with a rich history of ultra-violence.
"Deathmatch and bloody wrestling is tightly woven into the fabric of Australian wrestling at its core," said Deathmatch Downunder (DMDU) wrestler Joel Bateman. Citing wrestlers like King Curtis, Mark Lewin and The Sheepherders, Bateman notes that hardcore wrestling was a major part of the Australian scene for years, with DMDU looking to return the style to national prominence.
In addition to being at the forefront of a death match revival in Australia, DMDU seeks to be a safe environment for talent and fans. Medical staff is on hand for talent, bystander training is being done and the promotion has partnered with KultureCity on inclusivity programs. According to Bateman, the goal is to "try our absolute best to put out a product that is our best shot at what wrestling CAN be."
"...And Out Came The Wolves" features DMDU Tag Team Title Tournament action, Ritchie Taylor vs Tommy Knight, Caveman Ugg vs Jake Andrewartha and three death matches:
- Raw Beef (2 Krayzee and RxsP) vs Australian death match pioneer Mad Dog and Michael Weaver in a Barbed Wire Board Match
- Damian Rivers taking on Callen Butcher in a 100 Lighttubes Death Match
- Joel Bateman challenging Gweedo for the UGWA* Total Violence Championship in a Cut Can and Gusset Plate Board Death Match.
The stylistic diversity of the lineup and excitement of the first event were well summarized by Bateman, who clearly sees big things in store for Deathmatch Downderunder in 2021.
"We are so excited for what’s to come in 2021. #DMDUWolves was an amazing experience, and with the most amazing fans in the world Down Under, the sky is the limit for us. We try and present amazing tag team wrestling, hard hitting heavyweight wrestling as well as our namesake style. So even if you are not a huge deathmatch fan, I implore you to give us a go. I’m sure you will find something you like."
In addition to this Thursday's premiere, IWTV will also premiere Deathmatch Downunder's second event, Smashing Sandcastles, on Thursday, February 25 at 8pm EST. You can watch both premieres with your IWTV subscription.
*UGWA's Unfinished Business premieres on IWTV this Wednesday night (1/27) at 10pm EST.
